Can Jaxon Smith-Njigba really dethrone Megatron? The buzz is building as the Seattle Seahawks receiver sets his sights on a record that many thought was untouchable: Calvin Johnson's single-season receiving yards mark of 1,964, achieved back in 2012. It's a tall order, no doubt, but the oddsmakers are giving him a shot – albeit a somewhat long one.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba to SHATTER Record? Megatron's R...
Through 12 games, Smith-Njigba has racked up an impressive 1,336 receiving yards. That's fantastic, but the math is the math. To surpass Johnson's legendary total, he needs to haul in another 629 yards over the Seahawks' remaining five games. That's where things get interesting.
Currently, the odds of Smith-Njigba etching his name in the record books are listed at +400. For those not fluent in betting lingo, that means a $10 wager would net you a $50 payout if he pulls it off. It's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it suggests there's a glimmer of possibility. He needs to average 125.8 yards per game to make it happen. Now, keep in mind, Smith-Njigba has a slight advantage: the 17-game season format. Johnson set his record in a 16-game season, making Smith-Njigba's path statistically a touch easier, theoretically.
So far this season, Smith-Njigba is averaging a solid 111.3 receiving yards per game. He’s had eight games where he crossed the 100-yard mark, and four where he exceeded that crucial 125-yard threshold. He's even flirted with it a couple of times, putting up 123 and 124 yards in separate contests. But consistency is key, and that's where the challenge lies.
To put things in perspective, let's rewind back to 2012 and look at Johnson's pace. Through 12 games, Megatron was already sitting pretty with 1,428 receiving yards. He then exploded for 536 yards in his final four games, cementing his place in NFL history. One of those games was a monster performance – 11 catches for a whopping 225 yards. Smith-Njigba hasn't quite reached that level of dominance in a single game this season; his best outings were 162 and 167 yards.
Things got a little tougher for Smith-Njigba recently, though. In Week 13 against the Vikings, he had a season-low of only 23 receiving yards, and the Seahawks won 26-0. That's a performance he'll need to quickly shake off.
Looking ahead, the Seahawks face the Atlanta Falcons next. Atlanta's defense is no pushover; they boast a top-10 pass defense, limiting opponents to just under 188 receiving yards per game. That game will be a crucial test for Smith-Njigba's record-breaking aspirations. It's going to be an exciting finish to the season. Will Smith-Njigba make history? Only time will tell.
