Honduras Ex-President FREE! Trump Pardon Stuns the World!
Current Affairs 02 December 2025

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández is a free man, at least according to his wife and the U.S. Bureau of Prisons website. Convicted just months ago in a New York courtroom for accepting bribes from drug traffickers and facilitating the transit of some 400 tons of cocaine through Honduras into the U.S., Hernández was reportedly released from U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton in West Virginia on Monday. A bureau spokesperson confirmed his release on Tuesday.

Honduras Ex-President FREE! Trump Pardon Stuns the...

The reason? A purported presidential pardon from none other than former President Donald Trump. Hernández's wife, Ana García, wasted no time taking to social media platform X early Tuesday to express her gratitude. "After almost four years of pain, of waiting and difficult challenges, my husband Juan Orlando Hernández RETURNED to being a free man, thanks to the presidential pardon granted by President Donald Trump," she wrote, alongside a screen capture from the Bureau of Prisons website showing Hernández's release. It's quite a turnaround, to say the least.

Trump, never one to shy away from controversy, addressed reporters on Air Force One Sunday, stating that he was approached by "many of the people of Honduras" to pardon Hernández. "The people of Honduras really thought he was set up, and it was a terrible thing," Trump said. "They basically said he was a drug dealer because he was the president of the country. And they said it was a Biden administration set-up," Trump added. "And I looked at the facts and I agreed with them." It's a bold claim, to say the least, especially considering the weight of evidence presented during Hernández's trial.

This is all happening against a backdrop of Trump's past rhetoric, where he often cited the dangers of illegal drug flows from Latin America as justification for various U.S. actions, including military deployments. Remember the talk of attacking boats in the Caribbean? Now, he's seemingly pardoning a man convicted of actively enabling those drug flows. The irony isn't lost on anyone, I'm sure.

Hernández’s arrest in February 2022, at the request of the United States, came shortly after the current Honduran President Xiomara Castro took office. Two years later, Judge P. Kevin Castel handed down a 45-year sentence, intended, he said, as a warning to those who abuse their power, believing their status will protect them.

Throughout the trial, Hernández maintained his innocence, claiming he was a victim of revenge by drug traffickers he had extradited to the U.S. He even portrayed himself as a champion in the fight against drugs, collaborating with American authorities across three administrations. But Judge Castel didn't buy it, stating that trial evidence showed Hernández used "considerable acting skills" to appear anti-drug while actually protecting the trade. It's a stunning fall from grace, and now, thanks to a pardon, a potentially unfulfilled sentence. Where Hernández goes from here, and what this means for U.S.-Honduras relations, remains to be seen.
