Hold onto your hats, horror fans! Focus Features' highly anticipated horror flick, *Obsession*, from the mind of rising star Curry Barker, just got a serious boost. Jason Blum's Blumhouse, the undisputed king of modern horror, has officially jumped on board the project. This is a development that's got the horror community buzzing, and honestly, I can see why.
Blumhouse's 'Obsession' Trailer Drops! Prepare to ...
For those who haven't been following the hype, *Obsession* made a splash at TIFF’s Midnight Madness, reportedly snagging a cool $15 million acquisition deal from Focus. The film, written and directed by Barker, stars Michael Johnston as a guy desperately trying to win over his crush. He takes a dangerous shortcut, manipulating a mysterious figure known as "One Wish Willow" to get what he wants. As you can probably guess, the wish comes with a hefty, terrifying price. Think *Be Careful What You Wish For*, but cranked up to eleven.
The film's been racking up accolades left and right. Sold-out screenings at Fantastic Fest followed its TIFF debut, and it even snagged the Audience Award at the Sitges Film Festival, a major win. The buzz is palpable, and the fact that Blumhouse has now thrown its weight behind it speaks volumes about the film's potential. I mean, Blumhouse knows horror, plain and simple. They’ve got a knack for finding that special something, that raw nerve, that really connects with audiences.
Alongside Johnston, the cast features Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and, surprisingly, Andy Richter. It's an interesting mix of faces, and I'm curious to see how they all play off each other in Barker's vision. *Obsession* is slated to hit theaters on May 15, 2026, so mark your calendars. It’s a long wait, but I suspect it’ll be worth it.
What's particularly exciting is the overwhelmingly positive reception so far. A 97% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes? That's almost unheard of for a horror film these days. It suggests Barker has really nailed something special here. The film was produced by James Harris, Haley Nicole Johnson, and Christian Mercuri, with Capstone Pictures financing the entire project. Blumhouse's Jason Blum now joins as an executive producer, solidifying the project's horror credentials.
Focus Features has a pretty impressive lineup coming up, including *Anemone* with the return of Daniel Day-Lewis (yes, really!), and films from Yorgos Lanthimos and Chloé Zhao. And Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, post-merger, is gearing up for a massive 2026. *Obsession* is just one of many projects on their slate, which includes *The Mummy*, *Mortal Kombat 2*, and new installments in the *Insidious* and *Five Nights at Freddy's* franchises. Busy times indeed!
And that's not all! Blumhouse and Spooky Pictures are already partnering with Barker on his next project, *Anything But Ghosts*. It's clear they see something special in Barker's vision. *Anything But Ghosts* will see Barker in the director's chair once again, co-writing the script and co-starring alongside Cooper Tomlinson. It seems like the Barker train is just getting started, and I, for one, am buckled in and ready for the ride.
