Chrono Trigger Remake?! Horii's Response Has Fans in a Frenzy!
Tech Product Reviews 02 December 2025

The internet's abuzz, folks, and it's all because of a few carefully chosen (or maybe not-so-carefully chosen) words from Yuji Horii, the legendary creator of Dragon Quest. The subject? None other than a potential remake of the timeless classic, Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger Remake?! Horii's Response Has Fans ...

Now, this isn't just some random internet whisper. This year, 2024, marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger's initial release on the Super Famicom (SNES for those of us in North America). Square Enix, naturally, is celebrating. We're talking a swanky piano arrangement album of character themes – because who doesn't want to hear Frog's theme on a grand piano? – a character popularity poll where, unsurprisingly, Frog hopped his way to the top spot (courtesy of Famitsu), and even orchestral concerts planned for next January in Japan. Sounds pretty cool, right? But are they leading up to something bigger?

That's where things get interesting. During a YouTube discussion on November 30th, Horii was point-blank asked if these anniversary projects were hinting at a full-blown remake. His response? A masterclass in ambiguity. "I can't say," he apparently replied, followed by a playful, "You shouldn't ask that!" and the clincher: "I'll get told off!"

That's all it took. The rumor mill is now churning faster than Crono slashing through enemies with his katana. And honestly, you can't blame the fans. Chrono Trigger, released back in 1995, was a dream team project. Think Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest), and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball) all working together. The result? A near-perfect RPG that's consistently ranked among the greatest games of all time. I still remember playing it for the first time; that feeling of wonder is something few games have managed to recapture.

While there's an upgraded version available on Steam and mobile devices, it's not the same as a ground-up remake. The longing for a reimagining with modern graphics and maybe even some expanded storylines is strong. The situation feels a little like the Final Fantasy IX remake rumors that have been circulating, especially given that game's 25th anniversary celebrations. Remember that Nvidia leak from 2021 that suggested an FFIX remake was potentially in the works at Square Enix?

Of course, it's entirely possible that these anniversary celebrations are just that: a celebration. A chance for Square Enix to remind us of these beloved titles and maybe sell some cool merchandise. Only time will tell if Horii's teasing translates into something concrete. Until then, fans can only continue to make their voices heard, letting Square Enix know just how much they want to revisit the world of Crono, Marle, and Frog in glorious, modern detail. And maybe, just maybe, that's enough to tip the scales.
