Better Late Than Never: Mercedes Teases New G-Class Cabriolet
Mercedes G-Class Cabrio is BACK?! The Teaser That ...
Okay, folks, let's be honest: it's about time! Mercedes has finally dropped some breadcrumbs hinting at the return of the G-Class Cabriolet. For those who’ve been living under a rock, it’s been over a decade since they officially offered a G-Wagon with a folding top. Yeah, there was that ultra-exclusive Maybach Landaulet back in 2017, but let's be real, with a production run of just 99 units, that barely counts for us regular folks. And the current generation G-Wagon, launched in 2018? Nada. Zilch. Sure, Brabus and other tuners have been chopping roofs off and doing their own thing, but a factory-built G-Class Cabriolet? That’s a different animal altogether.
The official word came in the form of a teaser image released by Mercedes, subtly announcing the expansion of the G-family. It's shadowy, sure, but it's enough to get the gears turning. The profile suggests a Landaulet-esque design with the roof extending further back than the old two-door cabriolet. Also, and this is a big one, it looks like it will have four doors like all other modern G-Wagons. This is a departure from the classic short-wheelbase, two-door cabriolet we remember, but probably makes more sense in terms of practicality (as much as a G-Wagon *can* be practical, anyway).
Now, before you start dreaming of a new G-Class Cabriolet that's as bonkers as the old Landaulet with its portal axles and V12 engine, let's pump the brakes a little. While Mercedes *did* unleash a G63 4x4² with portal axles a few years back, that was an AMG beast, not a standard "Benz." My gut tells me this new cabriolet will be a bit more…refined. Don't get me wrong, I’m sure it will still be ridiculously capable off-road, but perhaps without the same level of extreme lunacy. It'll probably stick with a more conventional suspension setup, though a G550 (or even a G63) engine is definitely not out of the question.
Mercedes is being tight-lipped about the release date, naturally. But with the year rapidly coming to a close, I’d wager we’ll see an official unveiling sooner rather than later. Keep your eyes peeled – and your wallets ready, because this thing is sure to command a premium. A premium, open-air experience in a G-Wagon? That's something a lot of people have been waiting for.
