Samsung's Folding Phone SHOCKS! What Will Apple Do Next?!
Current Affairs 02 December 2025

Samsung just threw down the gauntlet in the foldable phone arena. The tech giant unveiled its first-ever multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, on Tuesday. Let's just say it's aiming to make a big statement, and frankly, it’s hard to ignore.

Samsung's Folding Phone SHOCKS! What Will Apple Do...

The Galaxy Z TriFold is unlike anything we’ve really seen before. Imagine a regular smartphone, then imagine it unfolding… twice. You end up with a massive 10-inch display (253.1 millimetres to be exact), a full 25% larger than even Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7. That’s practically a tablet in your pocket, or at least a really big pocket. The company released an image alongside the announcement, and it does look pretty slick.

Ronnie Ng, Vice President and Head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung Electronics Singapore, seems pretty excited about it. "Consumers in Singapore are always on the lookout for the next big thing," he said, "and we are excited to be one of the few markets to usher in a new era of mobile possibilities with the Galaxy Z TriFold.” He went on to emphasize that it builds upon Samsung's existing foldable leadership, offering a premium experience for work, creativity, and, of course, play. His confidence is clear, stating that the Galaxy Z TriFold is set to “unfold a new chapter in smartphone innovation."

Beyond the massive screen, the device reportedly boasts Samsung's largest battery in their flagship line, a feature that's practically essential given the power-hungry nature of such a large display. And thankfully, it supports super-fast charging, promising to hit 50% power in just half an hour. That's a relief, because nobody wants to be tethered to a wall all day.

Of course, a device like this doesn’t come without its challenges. While Samsung has refined its folding phone technology with the Z Fold line, this trifold model introduces new complexities. Analysts are already suggesting potential hurdles related to the device’s overall "completeness," whatever that means, and perhaps more importantly, its durability. Folding phones already have a reputation for being somewhat fragile, and adding another fold doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Only time and user reviews will tell if Samsung has truly cracked the code.

The foldable phone market is still relatively niche. Counterpoint Research estimates it represents less than 2% of the overall smartphone market this year, and anticipates it staying under 3% by 2027. That said, Samsung is clearly betting that innovative designs like the Galaxy Z TriFold can push those numbers higher. Whether consumers are ready for a phone that folds not once, but twice, remains to be seen. This is one gadget I'm definitely eager to get my hands on, just to see if it’s actually practical or just a really cool gimmick.
