England has made a surprising call for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, opting to bring in off-spinner Will Jacks for his first Test appearance in three years. He replaces the injured Mark Wood, a move signaling a tactical shift after the drubbing they received in Perth.
Ashes SHOCK! Uncapped Jacks Thrown into Critical T...
Jacks, 27, got the nod ahead of Shoaib Bashir for this day-night encounter at the Gabba. The decision seems to hinge on Jacks' batting ability, providing some much-needed depth to England's lower order at number eight. It's a bit of a curveball, I must say. Jacks' inclusion in the Ashes squad was already somewhat unexpected, given his recent focus on white-ball cricket. Now, he's presented with a golden opportunity to earn just his third Test cap.
Frankly, it's been a while since he's been a regular in red-ball cricket. He’s only featured in a handful of first-class matches this year, picking up just five wickets. However, his Surrey teammate Ollie Pope is singing his praises. "Everyone knows what a brilliant cricketer he is," Pope said. "He's obviously got that style of spin bowling where he can get some bounce and turn off the pitch…He can take on a really good attack." High praise indeed.
While Jacks has a solid 60 white-ball caps to his name, he is undoubtedly a batting all-rounder first and foremost. However, it's worth remembering he did bag six wickets on his Test debut against Pakistan in Rawalpindi back in 2022. Could this be a masterstroke from Stokes? Only time will tell.
It's often assumed that day-night Tests favor the quicks, but Australia's own Nathan Lyon's numbers with the pink ball are actually pretty impressive. He boasts better averages, economy, and strike rates compared to his performances with the traditional red ball. England captain Ben Stokes seems well aware of this. He highlighted Australia's strategic use of Lyon, noting how they utilize him both as an attacking option and to speed through overs to maximize the impact of the new ball under the lights. This is the tactical element Stokes hopes Jacks can bring.
The full England team for the second Ashes Test is: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer. Even with Wood out, England still has a decent pace attack with Archer, Carse, Atkinson, and, of course, Stokes himself.
While Jacks provides a valuable all-round option, Bashir's omission is undoubtedly a blow. It's the first time the young spinner has been left out of the lineup when fit since becoming England's first-choice spinner earlier this summer. He hasn't had much game time lately, suffering a finger fracture back in July. Still, you can't help but feel for him. It's a tough business, this cricket.
