Hold onto your popcorn, horror fans, because this news is huge! Universal Pictures just snagged the rights to "Portrait of God," a spec script based on Dylan Clark's terrifyingly popular short film. And get this, it wasn't just a simple deal; apparently, there was a full-blown bidding war among studios to get their hands on this project. Clearly, everyone sees something special here.
Horror Titans Unite! Raimi & Peele's Chilling "Por...
What makes this even more exciting is the sheer talent involved. Clark, who directed the original short, co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Russo of "The Inheritance" fame. But the real kicker? Sam Raimi, the mastermind behind "Evil Dead," and Jordan Peele, the modern-day horror icon who gave us "Get Out" and "Us," are both on board as producers. Yes, you read that right. Raimi and Peele are teaming up! I honestly never thought I'd see the day.
The original "Portrait of God" short, if you haven't seen it, is definitely worth a watch – if you can handle it! It’s racked up over 8.6 million views on YouTube since it dropped in August 2022, and that’s saying something. It’s a genuinely creepy, unsettling piece, and the fact that it's being adapted into a full-length feature with this kind of pedigree has me incredibly excited (and maybe a little scared).
Peele and Win Rosenfeld are producing through Monkeypaw Productions, their production company, under their existing deal with Universal. Raimi and Romel Adam are handling production through Ghost House Pictures, alongside Russo. Chris Rosati is executive producing, with Sam Evenson co-producing. It’s quite the powerhouse team. It's a real who's who of horror.
Jose Cañas will be keeping an eye on things for Ghost House, while Sara Scott, Universal's Executive Vice President of Production Development, will oversee the project for the studio. You know Universal is serious about this when they’re putting their top people on it.
Speaking of Ghost House, they've been busy! They just wrapped "Play Dead," described as "Don't Breathe" meets "1917," which sounds absolutely intense. And, of course, there's "Evil Dead Burn," the sixth installment in the "Evil Dead" franchise, directed by Sébastien Vanicek, coming out on July 24, 2026. They're also working on a seventh film in the series, written and directed by Francis Galluppi. So, plenty to keep Raimi and his team occupied.
Raimi and Ghost House are represented by CAA and Stewart Brookman and Mahdi Salehi at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, while Russo is repped by Untitled Entertainment, Fictional Entity, and Yorn Levine. Translation: everyone's got good representation, and this project is in very capable hands. "Portrait of God" is shaping up to be something truly special, and I, for one, can't wait to see what they come up with. Just try not to watch the trailer alone at night!
