Kansas Star's Injury Comeback?! UConn Faces Darryn Peterson Showdown!
Sports 01 December 2025

Lawrence, KS – Kansas Jayhawks fans, hold onto your hats! There's a buzz in Allen Fieldhouse, and it's not just the usual pre-game excitement. Freshman phenom Darryn Peterson, sidelined with a hamstring injury, might just make his return to the court this Tuesday against a formidable opponent: No. 5 UConn.

Kansas Star's Injury Comeback?! UConn Faces Darryn...

Coach Bill Self dropped a tantalizing hint on Monday, stating Peterson has looked promising in practice. He was quick to add, however, that the final decision rests on a crucial medical test scheduled for Tuesday morning. If Peterson clears that hurdle? Self didn't mince words: "If he plays, he's starting." That’s a bold statement, considering Peterson hasn’t seen game action in weeks.

Peterson's absence has been felt. After explosive performances in the first two games against Green Bay and North Carolina, the nation's top recruit has been relegated to the sidelines for six straight contests, including a tough loss to Duke. While the Jayhawks managed a 3-0 run at the Players Era Festival in Vegas, having Peterson back would undoubtedly elevate their game.

Self, ever the pragmatist, emphasized the medical team's role. "He has practiced, and he's gone up and down," Self explained. "The hesitancy I have is that before we'll announce anything, he has to test out medically from a strength and flexibility standpoint, and we'll know that in the morning." So, it's a wait-and-see situation for Jayhawk Nation, with high hopes pinned on that Tuesday morning assessment.

The NBA is already salivating over Peterson's potential, with many mock drafts projecting him as a possible No. 1 pick next June. His brief appearances showcased that potential, with 21 points against Green Bay and 22 against North Carolina. More than just points, he offers something the Jayhawks desperately need: the ability to create his own shot when the offense stalls.

Interestingly, Self sees a potential silver lining to Peterson’s time off. The injury has forced other players to step up, and step up they have. Sophomore forward Flory Bidunga has been a revelation, and newcomers Melvin Council Jr., Tre White, and Bryson Tiller have played crucial roles in the team's 6-2 start. "We've forced other guys to be aggressive," Self noted, "and now he's coming back, we may be more apt to play off him and play with him from an aggressive standpoint."

Ultimately, Peterson's return would be a game-changer for Kansas, not just in terms of talent on the court, but also in terms of the psychological impact on their opponents. Suddenly, UConn, Missouri, and NC State – teams already preparing for the Jayhawks – have to scramble and potentially scrap their existing game plans. Talk about a December surprise!
