Hasina Guilty! What Will This Corruption Verdict Mean for Bangladesh?
Current Affairs 01 December 2025

DHAKA - A political earthquake has struck Bangladesh, and the tremors are being felt all the way to the British Parliament. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a towering figure in Bangladeshi politics, has been sentenced to five years in prison on corruption charges. But the real shocker? Her niece, none other than British Labour MP Tulip Siddiq, was also found guilty, receiving a two-year sentence in the same case.

Hasina Guilty! What Will This Corruption Verdict M...

The Dhaka court, presided over by Judge Rabiul Alam, found Hasina guilty of abusing her power during her time as prime minister. The charges relate to a government land project, Purbachal New Town, a sprawling development on the outskirts of Dhaka. According to the court, Hasina improperly used her position to benefit her family.

And that's where Siddiq comes in. The court determined that the Hampstead and Highgate MP improperly influenced her aunt, Hasina, to assist her mother, Sheikh Rehana, in acquiring land within the Purbachal project. Rehana herself, Siddiq's mother and Hasina's sister, received a much heavier seven-year sentence, deemed the primary player in the alleged scheme.

Hasina, currently in exile in India since being ousted from power last year, was tried in absentia, a point that's sure to fuel further controversy. Siddiq, however, has vehemently denied the charges, blasting the entire process as a "flawed and farcical" kangaroo court. Her words, published in The Guardian, paint a picture of a politically motivated hit job. "The outcome of this kangaroo court is as predictable as it is unjustified," she stated, clearly furious at the verdict.

This whole affair is incredibly messy. Siddiq had already resigned from her position as Britain's minister responsible for financial services and anti-corruption back in January. This was after her financial ties to Hasina came under intense scrutiny. She remains a Member of Parliament, though, and has consistently dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign designed to damage her reputation. You have to wonder what effect this verdict will have on her political career in the UK. Will she be able to weather this storm?

The image of Siddiq standing beside Hasina in the Kremlin back in 2013 (as seen in the AP photo) now carries a far heavier weight. It serves as a stark reminder of the complex web of family ties, political power, and allegations of corruption that have now entangled both women in a scandal that spans continents. This story is far from over, and the political fallout is bound to be significant, both in Bangladesh and in the UK.
