Marrakech, Morocco – It's been a whirlwind at the Marrakech Film Festival, and one deal that's really caught my eye is Mad Distribution snapping up the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) rights to Meryem Benm’Barek’s compelling new thriller, "Behind The Palm Trees." Having seen it premiere here in competition, I can tell you, it's a film that stays with you.
Moroccan Thriller: Shocking Secrets Behind the Pal...
Mad Distribution, the distribution arm of Cairo-based Mad Solutions, clearly sees something special in this project. They're planning a wide release across the region, and it'll also feature prominently in their CineMAD initiative, which launches this December. This is a big deal for a film that's already generating buzz.
"Behind The Palm Trees" isn't your run-of-the-mill thriller. Benm’Barek weaves social and historical commentary into the narrative, exploring the lingering consequences of colonialism and the complexities of relationships within a conservative society. It's the kind of film that makes you think, not just jump.
Set in the vibrant, yet sometimes unsettling, city of Tangier, the film centers on a young Moroccan man, played by Driss Ramdi, who finds himself torn between his fiancé, Nadia Kounda, and a captivating French girl, portrayed by Sara Giraudeau. The allure of the French girl’s glamorous lifestyle proves tempting, but he knows his choices will carry significant weight. Carole Bouquet and Olivier Rabourdin add serious star power to the supporting cast, which should help draw audiences in.
This film is a true co-production, a blend of French, Moroccan, Belgian, and Qatari talents, spearheaded by Tessalit Productions and Furyo Films. The screenplay itself is a collaborative effort, with Benm’Barek co-writing alongside Fyzal Boulifa, Emma Benestan, and Agnès Feuvre. It's always interesting to see how these international collaborations can bring fresh perspectives and depth to a story.
The Doha Film Institute, Atlas Workshops, and the Red Sea Souk have all supported the film, and MAD Solutions even awarded it their Distribution Prize – a $50,000 package of distribution, sales, and marketing services. That kind of support speaks volumes about the film's potential.
Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, the co-founders of Mad Solutions, hit the nail on the head when they said the film shows "how love, passion, and the euphoria that comes with them are a universal language." Benm’Barek herself described her vision as crafting an "intimate thriller," where romantic tensions escalate into something far more dangerous. Tangier, with its inherent contrasts, provides a fitting backdrop.
Benm’Barek is no stranger to success. Her debut feature, "Sofia," won the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes' Un Certain Regard in 2018. With "Behind The Palm Trees," she's clearly aiming to push boundaries and deliver a film that resonates long after the credits roll. I, for one, am eager to see how it's received across the MENA region.
