Unification Church Leader's Trial: Ex-First Lady Scandal Explodes!
Current Affairs 01 December 2025

The legal troubles for the Unification Church continue to mount, with leader Han Hak-ja now facing trial on serious bribery charges. The case, which opened this week in Seoul, alleges that Han attempted to curry favor with high-profile political figures, including former first lady Kim Keon Hee, the wife of the already-imprisoned ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the People Power Party. The accusations strike at the heart of South Korean politics, raising questions about influence peddling and the role of religious organizations in the political arena.

Specifically, Han stands accused of violating the Political Funds Act and anti-graft laws. The prosecution claims she gifted a luxury necklace and several Chanel bags to Kim Keon Hee, a move allegedly intended to secure favorable treatment. Beyond that, she is further accused of working with a former church official, identified only as Yun, to funnel 100 million won (roughly $68,000) to Representative Kweon back in 2022. The alleged intent there, prosecutors argue, was to gain leverage and secure advantages for the Unification Church.

During the initial hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, Han's legal team vehemently denied the charges. Their primary defense seems to center on discrediting the testimony of the former church official, Yun. The lawyers argued that special counsel Min Joong-ki's case relies heavily on Yun's statements, painting him as a self-serving individual whose political ambitions led him to implicate Han unfairly. "The prosecution has rashly framed Han as an accomplice to Yun's actions, which were based on his political ambitions," they stated, suggesting Yun acted independently and without Han's direct knowledge or consent.

Furthermore, Han's lawyers attempted to distance her from the luxury gifts given to the former first lady. They claim Yun was responsible for preparing these gifts, asserting that Han did not instruct him to do so. This strategy aims to create doubt about Han's direct involvement and intent, suggesting she may have been unaware of the alleged bribery attempt. It's a classic defense tactic in these kinds of cases – pointing the finger at someone else.

The case is already generating significant buzz in South Korea, particularly given the Unification Church's controversial history and its complex relationship with political figures. Han's temporary release from detention last month for eye surgery, followed by her quick return after a court denied an extension, only adds to the drama surrounding the trial. As this unfolds, a hearing on Han's bail request is also scheduled, and the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of Han Hak-ja and, potentially, the reputation of the Unification Church itself. It will be interesting to see if the prosecution can provide convincing evidence beyond the testimony of a potentially unreliable witness.
