College basketball. It's a beautiful, chaotic mess, isn't it? Every year, it feels like a new cast of characters, new storylines, and, frankly, new teams vying for the top spot. My job here at FOX Sports is to try and make sense of it all, to sift through the hype and identify the real contenders from the pretenders. And that's exactly what these rankings are all about.
College Basketball Rankings SHOCKER: Is YOUR Team ...
Forget the preseason polls based on last year's reputation or some analyst's gut feeling. My Top 25 is built on something more tangible: grit, experience, and a clear team identity. We're looking for the teams that can handle the pressure, that have that 'it' factor that separates the good from the truly great. So, buckle up, because these rankings are going to be bold. There will be upsets. There will be accountability. And most importantly, there will be a focus on long-term viability, not just early season flashes.
And with that, let's dive into my debut college basketball rankings:
Nebraska, coming off their College Basketball Crown victory last season, starts strong. Rienk Mast and Pryce Sandfort form a really solid frontcourt, and that Bennett Stirtz kid, the Drake transfer? He's living up to the hype. 29 points, 6-for-8 from three against Ole Miss – that’s impressive. But it's their defense that's really turning heads, holding opponents to a Big Ten-leading 61.1 points per game. Coach Ben McCollum seems to have something special brewing in Lincoln. Meanwhile, keep an eye on Texas Tech's JT Toppin. The dude is a rebounding machine, averaging 21.3 points and 11.3 rebounds a game.
Indiana has burst out of the gates with a perfect 7-0 record, just demolishing teams by an average of 27 points! It's a team effort, with five players averaging double-figure scoring. That West Virginia transfer, Tucker DeVries, is leading the charge with 17.5 points per game. Early days, sure, but the Hoosiers are making a statement.
St. John's, who were darlings of the sport last year, are struggling a bit this season. Coach Rick Pitino's team has dropped all three games against ranked opponents. Can Bryce Hopkins step up and become the undisputed leader this team needs? That's the big question mark hanging over Queens right now. Hopkins is averaging 16.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, so the talent is there.
Over at Auburn, Coach Steven Pearl has inherited a tough situation, stepping into his father Bruce's shoes. He's facing a brutal early schedule with games against Houston, Oregon, Michigan, and St. John's. Keyshawn Hall has been a bright spot, but sophomore guard Tahaad Pettiford needs to elevate his game. Duke Miles and Tyler Tanner form a strong backcourt, though.
And finally, keep Vanderbilt on your radar. They're currently leading the nation in scoring, averaging a scorching 97.9 points per game. It's early, but that kind of offensive firepower is hard to ignore.
