Sound Smart: 7 Observations from NFL Sunday in Week 13
NFL Week 13 SHOCKER: Did You See What Just Happene...
Wow, what a week in the NFL! Seriously, did anyone see that Rams loss to the Panthers coming? It felt like the entire league decided to throw us curveballs, with underdogs barking loud and often. Thanksgiving and Black Friday were particularly kind to the Packers, Cowboys, Bengals, and Bears. Meanwhile, Josh Allen and the Bills? Business as usual against the Steelers. But some situations are much murkier, forcing us to rethink some preseason assumptions.
The quarterback carousel in Minnesota… well, it's officially spinning out of control. Things have gotten so dire that, and I'll admit this is a bit of a hot take, I started wondering if maybe *anybody* could be an upgrade. Max Brosmer? J.J. McCarthy? I even half-joked to a buddy that they should just let the water boy have a go. Sadly, Brosmer didn't exactly light the world on fire. 162 total yards? Eleven first downs across 13 possessions? Ouch. It makes you wonder...
Was this inevitable for the Vikings? Are they just a poorly constructed team at this point? Remember when fans were moaning about Sam Darnold leaving? Now, I'm starting to think Darnold might have dodged a missile. He probably looks at the Vikings situation and thinks, "Yep, good call on my part."
The problem in Minnesota isn't just the quarterback, though. It's about building a *supportive* environment. Kevin O'Connell, the quarterback whisperer of last year, suddenly has a real mess on his hands. He's got to rebuild his reputation, and that very likely involves finding a new signal-caller and, more importantly, fixing the entire offensive system.
Alright, let's talk Jerry Jones. The man is a walking, talking headline machine. He's the easiest owner in the league to criticize, especially since he also moonlights as his own GM. Between the drama and what appears to be some questionable roster moves, it's hard to tell if he's trying to build a contender or just create good TV.
But...and hear me out...maybe we're too quick to judge. Remember when he traded Micah Parsons (hypothetically, of course) for Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark while adding draft capital? The reaction was *brutal*. Everyone said he was insane. But the Cowboys are looking decent. And while Patrick Mahomes is playing otherworldly football, the Cowboys are still alive. I know, I know, their playoff chances are slim (17%, according to the nerds), but I'm getting a weird feeling about the 2025 Cowboys. Mock me if you want. Mock Jerry too. But I'm starting to believe.
Finally, a quick note on the 49ers. Remember Ricky Pearsall? He looked like he was going to be a steal! Two 100-yard games early on, solid production. Seemed like he was going to solve their receiver depth issues, especially with Aiyuk's injury and alleged attitude problems. Then, BAM, knee injury, six weeks on the sidelines, momentum killed. Such is the NFL. We’ll see if he can recapture that spark next year.
