Alright, folks, settle in because Howie Long just dropped a quarterback comparison that's got everyone talking. During the "FOX NFL Kickoff" pregame show, the Hall of Famer didn't hold back when discussing Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. He went there. He compared the young signal-caller to none other than... John Elway.
Is Caleb Williams the Next Elway?! Howie Long's SH...
Yes, *that* John Elway. The two-time Super Bowl champion, the guy who could make magic happen with his arm and his legs. It's a bold statement, especially considering Williams is still relatively early in his NFL career. But Long, clearly impressed by what he's seeing, isn't shying away from the comparison.
The timing of this pronouncement comes after a big win for the Bears on Black Friday, a 31-24 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. This victory not only cemented Chicago's spot atop the NFC North with a 9-3 record, narrowly edging out the Green Bay Packers, but it also put Williams' performance under the microscope. Now, to be fair, Williams didn't have a *perfect* game. His completion percentage was under 50%, and he threw an interception. But, and this is a big but, his mobility was on full display. He was under constant pressure from that Eagles defensive line, and he kept plays alive with his legs.
Long elaborated on what he saw, stating, "You know what he is? He’s John Elway from my generation. Now, John Elway, he didn’t light it on fire right away initially. Obviously, [he went on to have] a great career." The key here is that Long is acknowledging that Elway wasn't an instant superstar. He needed time to develop, and that's what Long seems to be seeing in Williams.
It's also worth noting the significant improvements the Bears have made to their offensive line. Last year, Williams was running for his life seemingly every snap. He was sacked a whopping 68 times. This year, the revamped line has provided much better protection, reducing the sack rate drastically. That stability is crucial for any quarterback, especially a young one still learning the ropes.
Beyond the physical talent, Long also highlighted the cultural shift in Chicago under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. "Caleb is starting to buy in," Long said. "[Johnson] challenged the team, but he also challenged the quarterback." It seems like Johnson's arrival has provided the spark the Bears needed after a disappointing rookie season for Williams. Maybe, just maybe, Howie Long is onto something. Only time will tell if Williams truly reaches Elway's level, but the potential is certainly there.
