Windows Snafu: "Speedy" Update Actually Slowing Things Down?

Windows Update NIGHTMARE! Is YOUR PC Next?! Users ...

Microsoft, in its ongoing quest to make Windows 11 the slickest operating system on the block, appears to have stumbled. The latest update, which was supposed to inject a serious dose of speed into File Explorer, is reportedly doing the opposite. Users are reporting sluggish performance, and independent tests are showing that Microsoft’s much-hyped “pre-loading” system isn't exactly delivering on its promises. It's a bit of a head-scratcher, really. I mean, who doesn't want a faster File Explorer?

The idea behind this update was pretty straightforward: make File Explorer launch almost instantly by pre-loading it in the background. Microsoft boasted about near-instantaneous launch times. Sounds great, right? Except, the reality, according to those independent tests, is far less impressive. We're talking barely perceptible improvements, at least according to the benchmarks that are starting to emerge.

Apparently, this "pre-loading" magic only makes a difference when you slow things down to a snail's pace – like 0.25x slow motion. In other words, for the average user just trying to open a folder and find a file, the speed boost is virtually non-existent. This is a classic case of marketing hype not quite matching up with real-world performance. You can almost picture the engineers scratching their heads right now.

And it gets worse. Not only is the speed increase negligible, but the new File Explorer is also a memory hog. This new pre-loading system is apparently gobbling up significantly more RAM – 67.4 MB compared to the older version's 35 MB. That might not sound like much, but for users with older machines or limited memory, it could make a noticeable difference. It's like adding a small tax on your system's resources, and for what benefit?

Perhaps the most damning indictment is this: the revamped File Explorer in Windows 11 is reportedly slower than the classic version in Windows 10. Yes, you read that right. Microsoft's supposed improvement is actually a downgrade compared to its predecessor. That's a tough pill to swallow. It certainly makes you wonder what exactly went wrong during development.

Now, Microsoft is saying that this pre-loading system is still in its early stages, which leaves the door open for future improvements. But in the meantime, the current situation is... well, underwhelming. And to add insult to injury, major manufacturers like Dell are reporting slower-than-expected adoption rates for Windows 11. Maybe these performance issues are partly to blame? Only time will tell, but for now, it seems Microsoft's attempt to accelerate Windows 11 has left users feeling, well, a little bit sluggish themselves.
