Rian Johnson, the mastermind behind the "Knives Out" franchise, isn't exactly pinning all his hopes on landing one particular star for his whodunits. However, he's definitely got his eye on one acting legend in particular: Meryl Streep.

Knives Out SHOCKER: Meryl Streep Next Victim?! You...

"There are so many great actors I’d like to work with," Johnson recently told IndieWire, hinting at the seemingly endless possibilities the "Knives Out" universe offers. But when the conversation turned to Streep's recent appearance on "Saturday Night Live," a genuine spark ignited. "If Lorne [Michaels] can do it, then, goddamn, so can we," he declared. And you know what? He has a point. If Lorne can get her, why *not* Rian?

Of course, Streep's involvement in a murder mystery wouldn't be entirely new territory. She's already dipped her toes into the genre with Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," which, let's be honest, is a pretty fantastic comedic take on the classic formula. And with her schedule filling up – including a return as the formidable Miranda Priestly in the "Devil Wears Prada" sequel slated for 2026 – one wonders if she’ll have any room in her schedule. But one can dream, right?

Johnson’s enthusiasm for the "Knives Out" saga is clearly unwavering. The original film, starring Ana de Armas, took the world by storm back in 2019, revitalizing the murder mystery genre for a modern audience. And "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," the upcoming third installment, is already shaping up to be another star-studded affair. Seriously, look at this lineup: Josh Brolin, Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Andrew Scott, Glenn Close, and Thomas Haden Church. It’s practically an embarrassment of riches!

This time around, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, naturally) finds himself entangled in a new case involving the murder of a "domineering monsignor" (played by Brolin) in upstate New York. It sounds like a recipe for plenty of twists, turns, and, of course, some sharp-witted dialogue. While we eagerly await to see who the killer is, and whether Ms. Streep will be featured in a future Knives Out installment, it’s certain that Rian Johnson is cooking up something special again.
