McLaren SHOCKS F1! Piastri Takes Pole - What Happe...
The air crackled with tension throughout qualifying. While Verstappen is always the man to beat, McLaren clearly brought something special to Qatar. Piastri's pole-winning lap of 1:19.387 was a masterclass, building on his sprint race victory earlier in the weekend. The pressure is definitely on the championship leader now. I, for one, am here for the drama.
Q3, the final qualifying session, was a McLaren showcase. Piastri immediately set the pace, forcing Norris to push. However, Norris, usually so composed, made a critical error, running wide at Turn 2 on his initial run. It was a costly mistake. He only had one clean lap to try and beat Piastri, and it wasn't enough. The disappointment was evident on his face afterwards.
Here's the top three from qualifying:
1️⃣ Oscar Piastri – 1:19.387 2️⃣ Lando Norris – +0.108 3️⃣ Max Verstappen – +0.264
Verstappen, despite starting third, remains a significant threat. Red Bull hasn't looked quite as dominant as we've seen them this season, but Verstappen's race pace is legendary. "This weekend hasn't been ideal, but P3 creates opportunities for tomorrow," Verstappen commented after qualifying. Translation: Don't count him out.
Don't forget George Russell lurking in fourth. The Mercedes driver is right behind the McLarens and Verstappen, and a good start could really shake things up. He's close enough to disrupt the established order, and that's something to keep an eye on. A good start from Russell could really make things interesting.
Earlier in qualifying, Q1 saw some shocking eliminations, including Lewis Hamilton, who had a nightmare session. Also out in Q1 were Tsunoda, Ocon, Stroll and Colapinto. Q2 saw Hulkenberg, Lawson, Bearman, Bortoleto, and Albon fail to progress to the final session. Williams and Sauber really struggled to find pace, falling short of expectations. Here's the full qualifying classification:
1 Oscar Piastri (McLaren) 1:19.387 2 Lando Norris (McLaren) +0.108 3 Max Verstappen (Red Bull) +0.264 4 George Russell (Mercedes) +0.275 5 Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) +0.459 6 Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) +0.727 7 Carlos Sainz (Williams) +0.900 8 Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) +1.031 9 Pierre Gasly (Alpine) +1.090 10 Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) +1.174
After his pole-winning lap, Piastri's radio message was simple and confident: "Like the sprint... I need to do the same thing again." The young Australian clearly has his eyes on the prize. He's feeling confident, and that's a dangerous combination for his rivals. He knows what he has to do tomorrow.
